Gastric Cancer

Gastric cancer is a malignant tumor derived from epithelial cells of the gastric mucosa. This type of cancer shows proliferation, infiltration and metastasis, causing fatal dysfunction in normal organs or fatal systemic malnutrition.

The etiology remains to be clarified. However, it has been reported that carcinogens including certain kinds of chemical substances act on DNA, causing changes as the first step of carcinogenesis (initiation). These changes are amplified (promotion), and carcinogenesis is completed.

It has also been shown that a pathogen, Helicobacter Pylori, causes chronic gastritis, which is closely associated with the onset of peptic ulcer. In addition, it is indicated that Helicobacter Pylori is associated with gastric cancer.

Advances in endoscopy have facilitated detecting early cancer. Figure1 shows an excavated type early cancer measuring approximately 3mm in diameter. Such a small cancer is difficult to image on routine barium examination, unless performed by skilled radiologists. However, the mucosal surface can be directly examined using an endoscope, and physicians with some degree of experience can relatively readily detect small cancer. Simultaneously, tissue specimens at the site where cancer is suspected can be collected for definite diagnosis.
